Hick's Law: The Tyranny of Choice

Hick's law, formulated by British psychologist William Edmund Hick in 1952, states that the time it takes to make a decision increases logarithmically with the number and complexity of choices.

The Formula

RT = a + b × log₂(n)

Where:

RT = reaction time (decision time)

a = the time not involved in decision making (perception, motor response)

b = an empirically derived constant based on cognitive processing time per bit

n = number of equally probable alternatives

The logarithmic relationship is crucial. Going from 2 choices to 4 choices does not double decision time. It increases it by a fixed amount. But each additional doubling adds the same increment again. This means the cost of adding options accelerates.

Fewer choices = faster decisions = higher conversion.

Where Hick's Law Applies Most

Navigation menus. Every item in your nav increases decision time for all users on every page load.

Pricing pages. The classic three tier pricing page exists because of Hick's law. More than three tiers slows decisions.

Product filters. Too many filter options can paralyse users more than helping them.

Form dropdowns. A country selector with 250 options is slower than a search field.

CTAs per page. Multiple calls to action compete for attention and slow decisions.

When Hick's Law Does Not Apply

Familiar interfaces. Expert users with learned patterns are not slowed by options they have memorised.

Search interfaces. When users know exactly what they want, more options do not slow them.

Browse and explore. When the goal is discovery rather than decision, more options can be appropriate.

Fitts's Law: Size and Distance Matter

Fitts's law, published by Paul Fitts in 1954, predicts the time required to move to and select a target based on the target's size and distance.

The Formula

MT = a + b × log₂(2D/W)

Where:

MT = movement time

a = start/stop time (intercept)

b = inherent speed of the input device (slope)

D = distance to target

W = width of target (along axis of movement)

The ratio D/W is called the Index of Difficulty. Larger targets (larger W) and closer targets (smaller D) are faster to acquire.

The Commercial Implications

Big buttons, close to the cursor, convert better.

This seems obvious, but the mathematics give us precision:

Doubling button width reduces acquisition time by a fixed amount.

Halving distance to the button reduces acquisition time by the same amount.

Primary CTAs should be large and prominent. Secondary actions should be smaller and further away.

Practical Applications

Primary CTA sizing. Make your primary button the largest clickable element on the page.

Mobile touch targets. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines recommend minimum 44×44 points. This is Fitts's law in action.

Edge positioning. Buttons at screen edges are effectively infinitely wide because the cursor stops at the edge. Menu bars at screen top exploit this.

Spacing secondary actions. Put destructive or reversible actions further away and smaller than primary actions.

Infinite edges on desktop. The corners and edges of screens are the easiest targets to hit. Put important actions there.

The Peak-End Rule: Memories Over Moments

The peak-end rule, identified by Daniel Kahneman and others, states that people judge experiences largely based on how they felt at the most intense point (the peak) and at the end, rather than by the average of every moment.

The Research

In Kahneman's famous colonoscopy study, patients who had a longer but less intense ending rated the overall experience as less painful than patients with shorter procedures that ended at peak pain. Duration was almost irrelevant. Peak and end dominated memory.

The Commercial Implications

The post-purchase moment is your ending. This is when the experience crystallises into memory.

Peak moments can be engineered. A single moment of delight can colour the entire experience.

Duration neglect means long experiences are not necessarily bad. A 10 minute checkout with a great ending beats a 2 minute checkout with a frustrating ending.

Serial Position Effect: First and Last Win

The serial position effect, first documented by Hermann Ebbinghaus, describes how position in a sequence affects recall. Items at the beginning (primacy effect) and end (recency effect) are remembered better than items in the middle.

In recall experiments, participants consistently remember the first few items (primacy) and last few items (recency) of lists, while middle items are forgotten more often. This creates a U-shaped recall curve.

First and last positions are prime real estate. Whatever you put there gets more attention and memory.

Middle positions are where options go to die. If you have an option you want to de-emphasise, put it in the middle.
